There was something about this little ancient toad surviving in the same prehistoric Los Angeles landscape as mammoths and other Ice Age giants that felt almost like a fairytale to me. So naturally, in my version of the story, he needed a crown. I designed Spea labreae as the King of the La Brea Tar Pits - an unlikely little monarch surrounded by the grandeur of prehistoric Los Angeles. The artwork combines natural history, vintage illustration, a little Gothic romance, and my own slightly irreverent sense of humor. It is for paleontology nerds, La Brea Tar Pits devotees, amphibian people, science lovers, Angelenos, and anyone else who thinks an extinct Ice Age toad deserves considerably more fanfare.
